UAE Extends Small Business Relief Until 2029: What It Means for UAE Businesses

Every growing business reaches a stage where managing tax compliance becomes just as important as managing growth. For many startups and SMEs in the UAE, the latest extension of Small Business Relief (SBR) brings welcome certainty and allows businesses to focus on expansion while benefiting from simplified Corporate Tax treatment.

The UAE Ministry of Finance has announced the extension of Small Business Relief until 31 December 2029 through Ministerial Decision No. 131. This means eligible businesses will continue to have access to the relief for an additional three years beyond the original expiry date.

What Has Changed?

Previously, Small Business Relief was available only for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026 under Ministerial Decision No. 73 of 2023.

With the new decision, the relief has now been extended to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. The eligibility criteria remain unchanged, allowing qualifying businesses to continue benefiting from the relief while maintaining their Corporate Tax compliance.

Who Can Benefit?

The extension does not change the existing eligibility conditions.

In general, UAE Resident Persons with annual revenue not exceeding AED 3 million may elect to claim Small Business Relief, provided they satisfy the prescribed requirements under the UAE Corporate Tax Law.

Where the relief is validly elected, the business is treated as having no taxable income for the relevant tax period, meaning no Corporate Tax is payable for that period.

A Common Misconception

Many business owners assume that if no Corporate Tax is payable, there is nothing further to do.

This is not the case.

Businesses claiming Small Business Relief must still:

• Maintain proper accounting records.

• Keep supporting documents for business transactions.

• File their Corporate Tax Return within the prescribed deadline.

• Continue meeting the eligibility conditions throughout the relief period.

The relief reduces the tax burden — it does not remove the compliance obligations.

Why This Extension Matters

The extension provides welcome certainty for startups, entrepreneurs, and SMEs operating in the UAE. Instead of preparing for the relief to end in 2026, eligible businesses now have additional time to strengthen their operations, improve cash flow, and invest in future growth.

It also reflects the UAE's continued commitment to creating a competitive and business-friendly environment that encourages entrepreneurship, innovation, and long-term economic development.

Our Recommendation

Although the extension is positive news, businesses should not assume they automatically qualify for the relief.

If your annual revenue is approaching the AED 3 million threshold or you are uncertain about your eligibility, it is advisable to review your Corporate Tax position before filing your return.

A timely review can help confirm eligibility, minimize reporting errors, and ensure full compliance with the UAE Corporate Tax Law.

Final Thoughts

The extension of Small Business Relief until 31 December 2029 is a significant development for the UAE's small business community. While the relief offers valuable tax benefits for eligible businesses, understanding the qualifying conditions and meeting all compliance requirements remain equally important.

As Corporate Tax regulations continue to evolve, businesses should regularly review their tax position and stay informed of legislative updates. Seeking professional advice at the right time can help ensure compliance while allowing business owners to focus on what matters most — growing their business.
